Polymer Optics from Aachen

Being a research and development center for optical polymer components the city of Aachen has a long tradition because of the location of specialised research organisations. “Aachen Polymer Optics“ represents an association of three research institutes putting various scientific foci within the development and production chain of optical polymer components. This includes all process steps starting with the optical design, through tool and mold up to the replicative production. The association is represented by the Fraunhofer Instituts for Production Technology IPT and Laser Technology ILT as well as the Institute of Plastics Processing (IKV) in Industry and the Skilled Crafts at RWTH Aachen University.

Here you will find all the important information about current events.

The Aachen Polymer Optics Days are supported by:

Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT

The Fraunhofer IPT combines long time knowledge and experience in all areas of production technology. Located in Aachen and Paderborn we offer clients and project partners special and immediately practical solutions for the current production in the fields of process technology, production machines, mechatronics, production quality and metrology, as well as technology management. In the Fraunhofer Center for Manufacturing Inovation CMI in Boston MA we offer our customers a long-term technology transfer between European and American industries.

We understand production not only in individual operations, but consider all production processes and the links between all the elements of the overall process in their entirety – from pre- and product development via production preparation and assembly to the manufacturing.

Our business activities consider individual tasks and challenges within the following branches, technologies and product areas: tool and die making, optics, turbo machinery, life sciences engineering, lightweight production technology, and integrated mechatronic systems.

The Fraunhofer IPT currently employs a staff of approximately 450, currently working on projects in 6000 m² facilities, 3500 m² of which are used as laboratories and machining workshops.

Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT

With more than 540 employees and more than 19,500 m² net floor space, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, founded in 1985, is one of the most important contracting research and development institutes of its sector worldwide. Its experts develop and optimize laser beam sources and laser processes. In close cooperation with its clients, it uses laser technology to solve tasks for production, measurement technology, environment, energy, medical technology and biotechnology, all done in real life situations.

Institute of Plastics Processing (IKV) in Industry and the Skilled Crafts at RWTH Aachen University

IKV, the Institute of Plastics Processing at RWTH Aachen University, is Europe-wide the biggest research and education institute engaged in the field of plastics processing.

IKV’s research activities comprise the processing of plastics and rubber in the fields of injection moulding, extrusion and rubber technology, part design and materials technology, composites, and polyurethane technology.

IKV’s close contacts with industry and science, to get her with its outstanding facilities, ensure that students benefit from a comprehensive, practically oriented course of study. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Hopmann is Head of the Institute and Managing Director of the Association of Sponsors which includes more than 240 plastics companies from all over the world. He also holds the Chair of Plastics Processing at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University.
